Why taste matters more than ever in AI video

AI made it easy to generate video. It didn't make it easy to make video worth watching. The difference is taste, and it's now the most valuable part of production.

Why taste matters more than ever in AI video

A year ago, the hard part of video was making it. You needed a crew, a location, a budget and weeks of time. Today, anyone can type a sentence and get a moving image back in minutes.

So the hard part has moved. It is no longer can we make this? It is should we, and is it any good?

That shift is why taste has become the most valuable skill in AI video production.

The output problem

AI tools are extraordinary at producing options. Ask for a product shot and you'll get twenty. Ask for a mood and you'll get fifty. The volume is real, and it's useful.

But volume creates a new problem. When everything is possible, most of what gets made is average. Feeds are filling up with the same glossy lighting, the same slow push-ins, the same slightly-too-perfect faces. Viewers have learned to recognize it in a second, and they scroll past it just as fast.

The tools didn't fail. They did exactly what they were asked. The missing piece was someone deciding what to ask for, and what to throw away.

What we mean by taste

Taste sounds vague, so let's be specific. In AI video production, taste shows up in three places:

Choosing the idea. Before any prompt, there's a question: what is this video actually trying to make someone feel or do? A clear idea narrows a hundred possible directions down to one. Without it, you get beautiful footage that says nothing.

Choosing the frames. Generation gives you abundance. Taste is the edit, in the literal sense. Which shot holds attention? Which one looks impressive but breaks the story? Which one feels like your brand and not everyone else's? Most of the work is saying no.

Finishing by hand. The last 20% is where AI video either looks cheap or looks considered: pacing, color, sound, the half-second pause before a cut. These are human decisions, and audiences feel them even when they can't name them.

Why it matters more now, not less

There's an assumption that AI makes taste less important, because the machine "does the creative part." We think the opposite is true.

When production was expensive, the budget itself forced decisions. You couldn't shoot fifty versions, so you had to commit to one. AI removes that constraint. Now the only thing standing between a brand and a flood of forgettable content is judgment.

In other words: AI raised the floor. Taste is how you raise the ceiling.

Five signs an AI video was made without taste

You've seen these, even if you haven't named them:

  1. Everything is beautiful, nothing is memorable. Every shot is polished, but you can't recall a single one ten seconds later.
  2. The camera never stops moving. Endless slow drifts and push-ins, because motion was easy to generate, not because the story needed it.
  3. The brand could be anyone. Swap the logo and the video works just as well for a competitor.
  4. The details fall apart. Hands, text, product shapes and physics that almost work, left in because no one looked closely.
  5. No rhythm. Shots are stitched together at equal length, with music laid on top instead of cut to.

None of these are technical failures. They're decisions that weren't made. Good AI video production is mostly the act of making them, one by one.

How this works in practice

At Kaf.Social, every project starts with an idea and a script, not a prompt. We use generative tools where they make us faster and more ambitious: exploring looks, building worlds that would be impossible to shoot, producing variations at scale. Then people take over where it matters: directing, selecting, editing, color and sound.

The result should never look like "AI video." It should look like a video that happens to have been made with AI.

The question to ask

If you're evaluating AI video for your brand, don't start with which tool should we use? Start with who is deciding what's good?

The tools will keep getting better, and they'll keep getting cheaper. The judgment behind them is what will separate the work people remember from the work they scroll past.

AI changed what's possible. Great video still needs taste, judgment and craft.
